William (Bill) Deviney Obituary
William Charles (Bill) Deviney, age 89 of Spindale died Thursday, January 22, 2026, at his home. Bill was born on January 27, 1936, in Hendersonville, North Carolina and was the son of the late Emory Otis Deviney and Mary Willie Flynn Deviney. A year later, the family moved to Rutherford Co. North Carolina where he remained for the rest of his life.
Bill was a 1955 graduate of R-S Central High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he became a dental technician. He served in Alaska, The Great Lakes, and New Mexico.
After returning home, he attended Gardner-Webb University, until he left to help his father run the family business distributing Exxon Oil products and home heating fuels. Eventually he became owner and operator of Deviney Oil Service. He was known for always taking great care of his customers, especially the elderly. He proudly did this for 47 years before he retired.
In June of 1963, Bill married the love of his life, Ann James. Together they made their home and raised two daughters, Amy and Cindy.
At the age of ten, Bill joined Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church. During the next 80 years, he was active there and served as a deacon, an elder, and treasurer at different times.
Growing up he was in Spindale Boy Scout Troop 3 where he made lasting friendships. He was a former Jaycee and as an avid reader, he was honored to serve on the board of the Norris Public Library for a number of years. He thoroughly enjoyed the gatherings of Spindale Boys, which later became Spindale Folks.
Bill was a die hard Tarheel fan who especially enjoyed Carolina Basketball. In addition to family, Bill and Ann enjoyed all the wonderful times spent with their Supper Club and Dirty Dozen golf group. This included traveling to the beach to play golf and to his favorite place, Lake Lure. Bill spent much of his life at Lake Lure boating, fishing and water skiing. He was a member of the Lake Lure Homeowners Association and a former member of the Century Boat Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Otis Deviney and James Raymond Deviney and his brother-in-law, Ben Evans Wall.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ann James Deviney of the home, his daughters, Amy Deviney of Clayton, NC and Cynthia Deviney Camp of Rutherfordton, brother, Jerry F. Deviney and wife Linda of Virginia Beach, VA, his sister, Joan Deviney Wall of Rutherfordton, and Mary Rachel Moore and husband Hugh of Spindale. He was Papa to grandson Miles William Usery and granddaughter, Nell Bentley Camp. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank all the medical personnel who helped take care of Bill throughout his journey. This includes Centerwell Home Health, Comfort Keepers, and Hospice. We are especially grateful for the caretakers, Shirley Padgett and Melissa Dawkins.
