Robert Avery Hoppes

Robert Avery Hoppes, age 79 of Bostic, died Monday, August 23, 2021, at Atrium Health-Cleveland in Shelby.  Robert was born on December 19, 1941, in Rutherford County and was a son of the late Burlin and Fannie Marshall Hoppes.  He was a self-employed paint contractor having painted in many homes in the county.  A lifelong resident of Rutherford County, he was a graduate of Ellenboro High School. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister, Murriel Hoppes and brother, Grady Hoppes.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Diane Porter Hoppes of the home, his daughters, Lora Hoppes Murray and husband Philip of Ellenboro, Lynn Hoppes Murray of Bostic, Melinda Hoppes Bishop and husband Bo of Rutherfordton, and Crystal Hoppes Hamby and husband Travis of Gilkey, two brothers, Roy Hoppes and wife Carolyn, and Earl Hoppes and wife Eunice all of Bostic, as well as his grandchildren, Katie McFarland, Leslie Carpenter and husband Leon, Lauren Boyd and husband Aaron, Austin Cole, Emily Yount and  husband Tyler, Braydin Hamby, and great-grandchildren, Felicity Carpenter, Cooper Boyd and Salem Boyd.

A graveside service will be held privately for the family at Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery. 

The family suggests that memorials be made in his memory to McDowell County Schools Endowment Fund for Children’s Literacy, 334 South Main Street, Marion, North Carolina 28752.
