Kathryn “Kay” Hawk Young, age 82 of Forest City, died Thursday, February 29, 2024. Kay was born on February 24, 1942, in Bradley County, Tennessee and was a daughter of the late Robert and Peggy Julian Hawk.
Kay came to Rutherford County from Cleveland, Tennessee and remained a resident for the past forty-eight years. She worked for the Rutherford County Sheriff's Department where she rose through the ranks to Captain in the Detention Facility. Kay was also a member of the Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church where she was Deacon, and she was active in the Bible Study Group as well as other church activities.
Always active and a sweet spirit, she enjoyed crafts and was an excellent seamstress. Above all else, she was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert (Bobby) Hawk and his wife Jacqueline, and her brother Dan Hawk.
Survivors include her longtime companion, Charles Hamrick of Ellenboro and his family that she loved dearly; her daughters, Lora Wilson of Ellenboro who was her devoted caretaker, and Ann Young of Rutherford County; her sister, Ann Preston and husband, Reverend Dr. George “Pete’ Preston of Louisville, Tennessee; her sister-in-law, Earlene Hawk of Cleveland, Tennessee. Her grandchildren, Kimberly Greene and husband Ron of Glen Alpine; Jeremy Porter of Ellenboro; Michael Wilson of Charleston, South Carolina, Emily Young of Alabama, and her granddaughter-in-love Crissy Porter of Ellenboro. Her great-grandchildren Ashley Benton and husband Chanze; Hunter, Alizah, Bryson, Natalie, and Emma Porter; Austin, Dalton and Braylee Greene; Lily and Alex Wilson and her great-great granddaughter Kiri Benton. She is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3 o'clock on Thursday, March 7, 2024 at the Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Dr. Donald G. Schofield officiating. The family will have a time of visitation from 2 until 3 o'clock in the Family Life Center prior to the service.
