Juanita Toney Obituary

Hazel Juanita Toney, age 86 of Shelby died Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at Wendover Hospice in Shelby.  Juanita was born on January 30, 1940, in Rutherford County and was the daughter of the late Joseph Woodrow Thrift and Reba Kay Powell Thrift. 


Juanita was a homemaker and a faithful member of Gantts Grove Baptist Church where she was active cooking and serving meals.  She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and she loved camping with her husband at Green Mountain.


In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Diane Green,  her great-grandson, Bradley Liam Greene, and her brothers, Alan Thrift, Dean Thrift, and Eugene Thrift.


Survivors include her husband of 70 years, William Floyd Toney of the home, her son, Dennis Toney and wife Betty of Forest City, her daughters, Brenda Kay Toney Ligon of Shelby, Elizabeth Smith and husband Michael of Forest City, and Marie Roach and husband David of Forest City, a granddaughter that she and Floyd raised, Tanya Lynn O’Brien, and her brother, Joe Lee Thrift of Forest City.  There are also 15 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.


The funeral service will be held at 2 o’clock on Monday, June 15, 2026 at Gantts Grove Baptist Church with the Reverend Robert Lane officiating.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the church from 1 until 2 o’clock prior to the service.
