John Wayne Towery, age 81 of Forest City died Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, Forest City. Wayne was born on October 17, 1940, in Rutherford County and was a son of the late James Fay Towery and Eloise Christy Towery. He was a retired long distance truck driver having worked for Watts Regulator, and he served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
Wayne was a lifelong Baptist and a graduate of Chase High School. He was a devoted husband, a loving step-father and grandfather and he enjoyed reading and watching old westerns.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances “Fran” Towery who died in 2017 and a brother, Chris Towery.
Survivors include a son, John Glen Towery of Forest City, two daughters, Rhonda Lynn McCraw and husband Mitchell of Forest City, Gina Marie Tate of Rutherfordton, his brother, Danny Towery and wife Dianna of Columbus. There are four grandchildren, Brandon McCraw, Lindsey McCraw, Joshua Padgett and Johnathan Towery as well as two great-grandchildren, Mitchell and Huntley McCraw.
The funeral service will be held at 2 o’clock Saturday, April 23, 2022, in The Padgett and King Chapel with the Reverend Ethan Gardner officiating. Interment will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park with military honors accorded by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 o’clock prior to the service at the mortuary.
