James Guy “Jim” Crowder, age 86 of Forest City, died Friday, May 24, 2024, at Mission Hospital in Asheville.
Jim was born on August 30, 1937, in Rutherford County and he was a son of the late Lee and Winnie Small Crowder. He was a lifelong member of Smith Grove Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and on various church committees, including many years on the Cemetery Committee. Jim was a 1957 graduate of Cool Springs High School, and he served in the United States Navy as a Jet Mechanic on board the USS Independence.
He worked for AG Industries in Forest City where he was Plant Superintendent until his retirement. Jim enjoyed everything outdoors, including hunting, fishing, planting a garden and motorcycle riding.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles Crowder, and Walter Boyce “Josh” Crowder, his sisters, Evelyn Crowder Huntley, and Margaret Crowder Fromhold as well as an infant brother, Robert Crowder.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ruby Lane Crowder of the home, his son, James Scott Crowder of Forest City, his daughter, Susan Crowder Hardin and husband Stan of Forest City, his sister, Mary Ann Coles of Rutherfordton, as well as his grandchildren, Lauren Hardin Hutchins and husband W.D., Joshua Brent Hardin and wife Ashley, and Ashley Brook Crowder. There are also three great-grandchildren, Julia Hutchins, William Hutchins, and Olivia Hardin.
The funeral service will be held at 2 o’clock on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at Smith Grove Baptist Church with the Reverend Terry White officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o’clock on Tuesday evening at The Padgett and King Mortuary.
