Helvi Luckadoo Obituary

Helvi Kosenkranius Luckadoo, 94, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at her home in Forest City, North Carolina, after a brief period of declining health.

Born in Tartu, Estonia, on May 4, 1931, she was the daughter of Hans and Georgine Tomberg Kosenkranius. Helvi enjoyed a happy childhood in a thriving democracy until the upheaval of World War II, during which she witnessed firsthand the brutality and oppression of both Soviet communism and Nazi occupation. In August 1944, as the Red Army advanced to reoccupy Estonia, she and her family made the difficult decision to flee. They escaped by boat across the Baltic Sea, eventually arriving in a Displaced Persons camp in the American sector of post-war Germany, where they lived for several years before immigrating to the United States through Ellis Island in 1949.

Helvi embraced her new life in America with gratitude and vigor. She cherished the freedoms she found here and remained active in politics and public service. In addition to raising her four sons, she worked at Rutherford Hospital and later as an enumerator with the U.S. Bureau of the Census in 1970. She eventually became the longtime manager of the bookstore at Isothermal Community College, where she served students and faculty with dedication until her retirement.

A lifelong animal lover, Helvi had a special bond with creatures great and small. Her home was always full of the companionship of animals, and her gentle spirit and sense of wonder even led her to befriend a stork as a child in Estonia. She also had a deep love for growing things, and her home and yard were always filled with thriving flowers and lush, well-tended plants.

After Estonia regained its independence in 1991, Helvi was able to visit four times, reuniting with relatives she had not seen or heard from in nearly 50 years—journeys that were profoundly meaningful to her.

Helvi was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bobby P. Luckadoo; her parents, Hans and Georgine Tomberg Kosenkranius; her brother, Hans Kosenkranius of Wilmington, Delaware; and her dear daughter-in-law, Deb Luckadoo, wife of Tim.

Left to cherish her memory are her four sons: Bill Luckadoo (Loretta) of Forest City; Tim Luckadoo of Cary, NC; Bob Luckadoo (Bobbie) of Shelby, NC; and Tommy Luckadoo (Mary) of Hickory, NC. She is also survived by her brother George Kosen (Vicki) of Sequim, Washington, her sister Milvi Gill of Castle Rock, Colorado, and her sister-in-law, Irma Luttrell of Wilmington, Delaware.

She was especially proud of her grandchildren: Lauren Beard (Brandon), Kate Overby (Joe), Maggie Luckadoo (Alex Setzer), Callie Lopez (Estuardo), Joshua Luckadoo, Annie Cannon (Coley), Sarah Kincaid (Josh), and Emma Corneliussen (Garrett); great-granddaughter Helvi Lopez and step great-grandson Matias Lopez; and several special nieces and nephews.

Helvi will be remembered for her resilience, her devotion to family, her deep sense of justice, her love of animals and nature, and her fierce loyalty to both the country of her birth and the country that became her home.

Helvi was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Forest City, where she served in various roles over the years, including caring for children in the nursery. In recent years, as her mobility declined, the church’s online ministry became especially meaningful to her, and she rarely missed a broadcast of the Sunday morning worship service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to the Media Ministry of First Baptist Church of Forest City so that others can continue to benefit from this important ministry.

The funeral service will be held at 3 o'clock on Sunday, June 8, 2025 at the First Baptist Church of Forest City with the Reverend Dr. Garin Hill officiating.  Interment will follow in the Cool Springs Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:45 on Sunday in the Family Fellowship Hall.

The service will be livestreamed beginning at 3 o'clock on the church's YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/@fbcfcnc/streams

The Padgett and King Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
