Gerald DeHaven Fussell
September 9, 1927 - July 21, 2026
With grateful hearts for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Gerald DeHaven Fussell, who took his final breath and went to be with the Lord on July 21, 2026 at the age of 98. He passed peacefully in the comfort of his home in Lake Lure, NC surrounded by his family.
Born on September 9, 1927 in the Flatwoods community of Polk County Florida, Gerald lived a remarkable life marked by unwavering faith, kindness and devotion to those he loved. A faithful Christian, he found strength and purpose in his relationship with God, allowing his faith to guide his words, actions, and the way he cared for others throughout his life. To know him is to love him, he never met a stranger.
Gerald proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. After his military service, he built a successful 45-year career in sales. His infectious personality and gift for connecting with people led him from selling shoes and automobiles to a long and rewarding career in produce with A. Duda & Sons, Inc. (DUDA).
Family was the center of his world. He cherished every moment spent with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family, always offering encouragement, wisdom, and unconditional love- and plenty of sugars. His favorite expression “What a Sugar” earned him the beloved nickname “Grandaddy Sugar”. He also treasured his many friendships, believing that the greatest blessings in life were the people God placed along the journey. His warm smile, quick wit and listening ear made everyone feel like they were his “best friend”.
Throughout his 98 years, Gerald lived with integrity, humility, and gratitude. His enduring legacy of faith, love and service that will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him.
Gerald is lovingly remembered by his children Dennis Dehaven Fussell Sr. (Suzette), Dale “Diane” Corbin, and Deborah “Darlene” Cavinee (Kenneth), his grandchildren Wayne Corbin, Gerri Fussell Smith, Stephanie Ruiz (Henry), Doug Corbin (Stephanie), Emily Cavinee Grooms (Douglas) and Krystal Hernandez (Hubert), 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Frances Juanita Douglas Fussell and his grandson Dennis DeHaven Fussell Jr.
A celebration of Gerald’s life will be held at one o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at Chimney Rock Baptist Church with Reverend Alex Heafner officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Meade, Florida at a later date. The family respectfully requests donations to Hospice or to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, in lieu of flowers.
Though he will be deeply missed, his family finds comfort in the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ. Gerald’s example of faith, love and selfless service will remain in their hearts forever.
