George Glawson Obituary

Howard George Glawson, age 87 of Forest City died Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at his residence.  George was born on December 13, 1937, in Rutherford County and he was a son of the late Howard Daniel Glawson and Bertha Matheny Glawson.

George was a graduate of Cool Springs High School, and he was a lifelong and devoted member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church where he served his church as a Sunday School teacher for 60 years, was Church Lay Leader for 30 years and Church Council Chairman for over 20 years. .  George was faithful to the church and its members, always willing to do his part.  

George served in the United States Army National Guard and the Reserves and was a member of the Forest City Masonic Lodge, No. 381 AF&AM for more than 66 years.  He was involved in his community as both a Little League Coach and as a Cub Scout leader. He also enjoyed the outdoors and golfing with his friends and UNC Tarheels.

George started his working career with the Clinchfield Railroad, and he continued to work after the merger with CSX Transportation.  He worked as a Station Agent and Clerk at Bostic Yard, Chesnee, and Marion.  He retired with 39 years dedicated service to the railroad.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Glawson.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Shirley Splawn Glawson of the home, his sons, Howard Daniel Glawson and wife Sandy of Charlotte, George Scott Glawson and fiancée, LaRae Varela of Sunshine, North Carolina and Reverend Christopher Andrew Glawson and wife, Neva of Ellenboro, his daughter, Elizabeth Ann Glawson Biggerstaff and husband Mark of Forest City.  There are 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 o’clock on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church with the Reverend Keys Pendleton officiating.  Interment with Masonic Rites will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 5 until 8 o’clock on Friday evening at The Padgett and King Mortuary.
