George Edwards Obituary

George Lee Edwards, age 63 of Spindale died Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at his home.  George was born on September 3, 1962, in Burke County, North Carolina and was a son of the late Walter Talmadge Edwards and Doris Elizabeth Smithers Edwards. 

He was a member of Harmon Street Baptist Church and a graduate of East Rutherford High School.  George was a long-distance truck driver for most of his career having worked first for A.V. Dedmon Trucking in Shelby and eventually as a self-employed trucker.  For many years his runs would take him to the west coast and back.  He was also a talented mechanic and could fix almost anything.  

George was a United States Army Veteran, and he proudly served his country. He loved his family most of all and spending time with them was always important to him.  George was an excellent cook, and he enjoyed cooking and firing up his grill for family and friends. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Matthew Edwards, and his sister, Susan Edwards Elliott.

Survivors include his brothers, David Edwards and wife Kim of Mill Spring, NC, Danny Edwards and wife Sharon of Forest City, Sam Edwards and wife Sharon of Bostic, and Mark Edwards of Forest City, his sisters, Sherry Edwards Smith of Charlotte, Martha Edwards of Fort Worth, Texas and Mary Edwards Ruppe and husband Terry of Forest City. There are also a number of nieces and nephews as well as a special great-niece, Anna Leigh.

The funeral service will be held at 12 o’clock noon on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, in The Padgett and King Chapel with the Reverend Judah Crowder officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service on Wednesday.  Interment will be held at 10 o’clock on Thursday at the Western North Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain where military honors will be accorded by the Rutherford County Honor Guard.
