Fred Shaffer

Frederick Lee Shaffer, age 85 of Ellenboro, died Sunday, September 20, 2020 at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills.  He was born on September 8, 1935 in Oakland, Maryland and was a son of the late Lee Shaffer and Marie Ridder Shaffer. Fred was also preceded in death by his wife Rachel Willis Shaffer who died in 2015.  He was well known in the community as the former owner/operator of Shaffer’s Amoco where he worked as a mechanic.  He had numerous hobbies that included fishing, boating, and woodworking. He also served his country as a veteran of the United States Army and was a member of the Forest City Masonic Lodge #381 AF & AM.

Survivors include his son, Franklin Lee Shaffer of Ellenboro, daughters, Jane Shaffer of Rutherfordton, and Melissa Cothran and husband Jimmy of Georgetown, South Carolina, a brother, Dave Shaffer and wife Annette of Mobile, Alabama and a sister Shirley Carr and husband June of Hendrix, West Virginia.  There are also seven grandchildren, TC Beheler, Lee Beheler, Jeremy Walker, Frances Walker, Brandon Walker, Franklin Shaffer Jr., and Shannon Shaffer as well as nine great-grandchildren. He is also remembered by his best friend Cheryl Waddingham of Rutherfordton.

The memorial service will be held at 2 o’clock Thursday, September 24, 2020 in The Padgett and King Chapel officiated by Jeremy Walker and Franklin Shaffer Jr. Interment will follow in the Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o’clock Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at the Padgett and King Mortuary.  In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills at 364 Hudlow Rd., Forest City, NC 28043 and to the Rutherford County VA Office at 394 Fairground Rd., Spindale, NC 28160.
