Ethel Shields Godfrey, age 89 of the Shiloh Community died Tuesday, February 14, 2023 at Rutherford Regional Medical Center.  Ethel was born on April 13, 1933 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina and was a daughter of the late Horace Elzie Shields and Ola Lee Shields.  She was a homemaker and a faithful member of Shiloh Baptist Church where she attended until her health declined.  She was a faithful wife, a loving mother and adoring grandmother and great-grandmother.  She was known affectionately by her grandchildren as Nanny. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Reid Godfrey in 2014, her sisters, Juanita Oliver, Esther Adkins and Dorothy Morgan, her brothers, Herman Shields, Jerry Wayne Shields and an infant brother, Ronnie Steve Shields. 

Survivors include her son, Phillip Godfrey of Forest City, her daughter, Rita Godfrey Trout and husband, Jimmy of Forest City, her sister, Brenda Joines and husband, Johnny of Green Creek.  There are also three grandchildren, Jared Godfrey and wife Candice, Jason Godfrey and wife Misty, and Chris Houser and wife Jessica, as well as six great-grandchildren, Phoebe Godfrey, Gavin Godfrey, Molly Godfrey, Isabella Godfrey and Millie Godfrey, and Cullen “Reid” Houser.

The funeral service will be held at 2 o’clock on Thursday, February 16, 2023 in The Padgett and King Chapel with the Reverend Michael Sepaugh officiating.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service.  Interment will be private for the immediate family at Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will be gathering at her home.
