Dixie Jones Hines, MD Obituary
Dixie Jones Hines, age 90, of Lake Wylie, South Carolina died Sunday, June 14, 2026. Dixie was born on July 23, 1935, in Rutherford County, North Carolina and was a daughter of the late B.T. Jones, Jr., and Rosagray Chesson Jones.
Dixie married her high school sweetheart, Bob Hines and together they raised three children; a son followed by two daughters. Dixie loved being a mother. Her devotion to her children was evident throughout her entire life. She was an inspiration to her family. Dixie’s legacy lives on in the lives of her children and grandchildren.
One of her proudest moments in life was being accepted into MUSC College of Medicine in Charleston, South Carolina at the age of 44. Although she had been told she could never get into Medical School at her age, she did. Although the rigors of studies and competition with much younger students proved difficult, she persevered and graduated from Medical School in 1983. She accomplished all of this while being a mother and becoming a grandmother for the first time. As the only grandmother medical student, she was featured in a segment on National Public Radio by Paul Harvey.
After a year of Internal Medicine Residency in Columbia, South Carolina, Dixie transferred to Baylor College of Medicine in 1984 in their Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program which she completed in 1987 and passed the Board Examination in 1988.
Her practice in PM & R (Physiatry) was in Columbia, South Carolina, and she retired in 2003. Dixie moved to Hilton Head, South Carolina. It was there that she met her husband, George Ling, and they married in 2007. In 2011 she and George moved to Charlotte, North Carolina to be closer to her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Geroge Ling, her son, Mark Hines and wife Debbie of Charlotte, her daughters, Celia Hines of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Dixie Hines of Lake Wylie, South Carolina, her sister, Jackie J. Davis of Forest City, and her wonderful grandchildren, Lisa Hines, Matthews Hines, Leah Menzies, and Ryan Hines.
The funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, July 11, 2026, in The Padgett and King Chapel with the Reverend Bruce Jones officiating. The family will receive friends from 11 until 12 noon prior to the service. Private interment will be in the Cool Springs Cemetery, Forest City.
