Annabelle Toms Smith

Annabelle Toms Smith, age 96 of Forest City died Sunday, March 19, 2023, at Fairhaven of Forest City.  Annabelle was born on May 29, 1926 in Rutherford County and was a daughter of the late George Pinkney Toms and Eula Edgerton Toms.  She worked alongside her husband as they owned and operated Monk’s Store on South Broadway Street for many years. 

Annabelle was a member of the Element Church, a former member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, and when her health allowed, she was active at the Rutherford Senior Center where she was the Head Cheerleader for many years.  She also enjoyed crafts of all kinds, especially knitting, crocheting, sewing and gardening. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin William “Monk” Smith, and siblings, Mary Langston, Worth Toms and Grace Philbeck.

Survivors include her son Michael Smith of Forest City, her sister, Ruth Toms Hodge of Forest City and a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 2 o’clock on Thursday, March 23, 2023, in The Padgett and King Chapel with the Reverend Chester Waters officiating.   Interment will follow in the Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 o’clock prior to the service at the mortuary.
