Donald Smith Obituary

Hugh Donald Smith, 80, of Old Caroleen Road, died Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at his residence.  A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Frank Smith and Pauline Lynch Smith and widower of the late Betty Vickers Smith.  He worked in textiles for many years and was a US Navy veteran serving aboard the USS Ohio.  He was the previous owner of Don’s Cruise Agency and also loved golf, traveling, and collecting art glass.  He was also preceded in death by brothers, Jack and Coy Smith, sisters, Hazel Bailey, Betty Moore, Dot Wood and Bobbie Ann Bailey and step-daughters, Crystal and Candice Hicks.

Survivors include his sons, Phillip Smith (Cindy) of Kings Mountain, NC, and Jeff Smith of Forest City, NC; a daughter, Deborah Bowen (Jimmy) of Rutherfordton, NC; grandchildren, Sheldon Smith, Wesley Smith, Tyler Smith, and Nicole Bowen; great grandchildren, Travis Smith, Haylee Smith, Kaylee Smith, Kel Smith, and Jerry Jenkins; and two step-grandchildren, Josh Little and Jordan Hicks.  There are also a number of nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express a special thank you to Hospice for your care and compassion.

Graveside services will be held 2 pm Saturday, May 12, 2018 in the Cool Springs Cemetery with Rev. Ken Linder and Rev. Terry Honeycutt officiating.  The family will greet friends at the cemetery following the service.  Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, P.O. Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043.
