Charles Walker Obituary

Charles Hubert Walker, age 95 of Highway 221-A, Forest City died Monday, February 12, 2018 at his residence.  Charles was born on October 8, 1922 in Rutherford County and was a son of the late Roy Edmond Walker and Sarah Luna Jenkins Walker.  He was  a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and worked for Duke Power Company for more than 42 years erecting and maintaining transmission lines in several states.  He retired as Area Supervisor of Transmission Lines.  Charles served his country in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the Mine Sweeper LCI 707.  He served in the European-African Theater and was at Normandy Beach at the D-Day Invasion.  Later he served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and was at Okinawa, and watched as the Marines raised the flag at Iow Jima, and participated in the liberation of the Philippines. Charles was proud to serve his country and that pride in the United States followed him every day of his life. 

 

Charles was a loving husband to his late wife, Miriam Louise Jones Walker who died in 2012.  His sisters, Lorene Pitchford, Dorothy Arrowood, Shirley Walker, and Joyce Zink, and brother David Walker as well as his son-in-law, Joseph Lloyd Cunningham preceded him in death.

 

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Linda Walker Cunningham of Forest City, two grandsons, Charles Wayne "Chuck" Cunningham and wife Melanie and their son, Joseph Hayden Cunningham all of Forest City and Joseph Kyle Cunningham of Charlotte, a sister, Jean Evelyn Daves of Forest City, sister-in-law, Linda Downey Walker of Bostic and a number of nieces and nephews.

 

The funeral service will be held at 3 PM Thursday at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church with Reverend Matt Mills and Reverend Bob Philbeck officiating.  Military Honors will be accorded at the church by the Rutherford County Honor Guard.  Entombment will follow in the mausoleum at Cleveland Memorial Park in Boiling Springs, NC.  The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 Wednesday evening at The Padgett and King Mortuary.  Memorials in his memory may be made to Mt.
