Billy Payne Gibson of McLean, VA died peacefully on July 21, 2009, at the Veterans Hospital in Washington, D.C. He was born June 10, 1921 in Monroe, North Carolina to the late Annie Bridges Gibson and Charles Armstrong Gibson. He was preceded in death by his sisters Eloise Ferree, Lynnette Arrowood and Elaine Parsons, brother Charles Gibson, and grandson Daniel Gibson. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty Jane Gibson of McLean, Virginia, and his sons, Douglas Gibson, of Dayton Beach, Florida, Donald Gibson of Charlottesville, Virginia and daughter Carolyn Dunbar, of Troutville, Virginia. He is also survived by his loving brother, James W. (Jimmy) Gibson of Forest City, North Carolina, his grandsons Matthew Gibson, Ryan Dunbar and Brett Dunbar, and great granddaughter Rebecca Dunbar. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews, including his great nephew Alex Haney.
Colonel Gibson was retired from the United States Air Force after 31 years of service. Upon leaving military service he spent a number of years as an executive in corporate management in the Washington, D.C. area. He was a command pilot and highly decorated veteran of WWII, the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland, and an avid hunter and gardener.
